Healthcare Hero: Jerrold Canakis, MD, TidalHealth Gastroenterology

Jerrold Canakis, MD, has always made his gastroenterology practice in Ocean Pines about family. That goes for his own blood family, which has been an enormous part of his journey, and the community that he takes care of.

Recently, Coastal Style readers voted Dr. Canakis as the Healthcare Hero of Worcester County.

“I am very honored and humbled to receive this recognition, particularly because it comes from the people in the community we serve,” Canakis said. “Being a physician is a privilege. Patients place a tremendous amount of trust in us, often at some of the most difficult times in their lives, and I've always tried to treat every patient the way I would want a member of my own family treated.”

Dr. Canakis and his wife, Carla, started their practice in Worcester County nearly 25 years ago and have worked hard to make it what it is today.

“It was truly something we built together, and I could not have done it without her,” Canakis said. “For Carla and I, to think about where we started and now see our sons pursuing their own careers with that same commitment is very meaningful.”

Their son Andrew joined the practice after completing advanced training in therapeutic endoscopy. He brings expertise in advanced endoscopic procedures and shares the same commitment to providing excellent patient care. Another son, Justin, is completing his gastroenterology fellowship at Penn State Hershey Medical Center and will then pursue advanced endoscopy training at Wake Forest. He plans to join the practice in 2028.

“As a father and as a physician, it is incredibly rewarding to see Andrew and Justin pursue gastroenterology and bring their own training, expertise and ideas to the practice,” Canakis said. “Our third son, Alexander, pursued his passion in finance and works with J.P. Morgan Chase. What makes me equally proud is seeing him bring that same personal commitment to his profession, helping people understand their finances, guiding them through important decisions and building relationships with the people he serves.”

Canakis believes that Alexander’s approach to his chosen field, like the rest of his family, shows that the same care can be applied to other fields. Whether you are caring for a patient or advising someone about their financial future, people want to know that you are listening to them, that you understand what matters to them and that you genuinely care.

“I have also always been fortunate throughout my career to work alongside outstanding nurses, advanced practice providers, physicians, medical assistants and staff,” Canakis said. “No physician accomplishes anything alone. Providing excellent care is truly a team effort.”

Dr. Canakis believes that caring for patients means he must continue striving to provide the best care possible. Good training provides the foundation, but medicine never stops evolving. And physicians have a responsibility to continue learning.

“At the same time, medicine can never lose the human element,” Canakis said. “We live in an increasingly technological world, and advances in technology and artificial intelligence are remarkable tools. But there are certain things technology can never replace: compassion, empathy, listening to someone, earning their trust and genuinely caring about what happens to them.

“That human connection is at the heart of being a physician.”
