Sherritt gets fuel pass for Cuba mine

TORONTO — Sherritt International Corp. says it has received a licence from the U.S. government authorizing the purchase and delivery of fuel to its Moa mine and processing operations in Cuba.

The company says the fuel licence is the first of a series that will be necessary for it to be able to restart operations at Moa as well as processing and refining in Canada.

Sherritt says it submitted its requests for the emergency licences in co-ordination with Gillon Capital, which is seeking a controlling interest in the miner.

Operations at the Moa joint venture were paused as Cuba faced fuel shortages after the U.S. cut off access to oil from Venezuela in January.

Sherritt says it is working to finalize the initial fuel shipment.
