Do as we say, not as we do
A few days ago, U.S. President Donald Trump attended a rally in Arizona. At about the same time, Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. ambassador to Canada was interviewed on The Really Big Show. At the rally, Trump once again told his adoring crowd that Canada will [end up being the 51st state, because that’s the only way it works.” Meanwhile. Hoekstra told his audience that Canada might be conducting “election interference” in the U.S. and warned: “Keep your nose out of American politics.”
So, the American government is warning us to stay in our lane. How dare we even ponder the thought of meddling in their affairs.
This, of course, is the regime which sent forces to kidnap Nicolas Maduro, the president of Venezuela; the regime that sent JD Vance to support Hungarian authoritarian leader Viktor Orbán in his re-election bid and then went on to Germany to back a far-right extremist party. Let us not forget that members of Trump’s inner circle, including Scott Bessent, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, met with members of several Alberta separatist groups in Washington last spring.
I cannot believe the depth of American arrogance at this moment, nor can I fathom why our federal leaders tolerate such hypocritical nonsense from our neighbours to the south. Hoekstra should be summoned to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office, dressed down and sent packing.
To add insult to injury, at the end of his interview, Hoekstra spoke glowingly of Alberta and its oil reserves. Go figure.
