‘It’s something about being there. It’s the nostalgia, but it really is the big blue sky of it’

“Having the camera there as a part of the scene, not something you have to ignore, changes the way you tell the story so much. It becomes kind of a confidant to you, and you can say so much with just one look. In the next project I did, I actually caught myself looking into the lens so many times because I was so used to doing it. But it’s such a fun format to work with. I loved it. It’s so conducive to comedy, it’s wild,” she says.
In addition to Slo Pitch, Salgueiro recently wrapped filming on an adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar, directed by Sarah Polley — “it was incredible, that’s all I’ll say” — and is working on her own projects, as well as auditioning for other roles.
“The hustle continues, my friend,” she says.
But before we finish our interview, Salgueiro wants to say one more thing about Winnipeg.
“I think because I spent so much of my childhood looking out of a car window at the huge, beautiful sky and the sheet of snow, it was such a fertile place for me to imagine things and to dream. And that still happens when I go back to visit. I’ll be driving somewhere, and I’ll be like, ‘Oh yeah, this is the place where my imagination really gets to expand and play,’” she says.
“It’s something about being there. It’s the nostalgia, but it really is the big blue sky of it.”
