Furniture with higher legs gives a small room a lighter, airier feel.

SMALL spaces are often the most difficult. With space at a premium, it is critical to make every inch count. Thoughtful space planning and good design are crucial to help ensure a small space lives large.

When looking for ways to make the most of a small space, here are some top tips.

1. Choose furniture that is lifted off the floor

Sofas, chairs and tables with raised legs help to create a sense of lightness.

2. Go vertical

Vertical elements such as tall mirrors and artwork help to lift the eye and make small rooms feel taller and bigger.

3. Pick an inspirational piece

Choose a “hero” piece and let it serve as the anchor and inspiration to a room as opposed to littering a room with a bunch of small pieces.

4. Use mirrors thoughtfully

Mirrors instantly help to open a space. Mirrors placed opposite a window help to expand and bounce light.

5. Choose a soft, soothing colour palette

Lighter colours and a limited palette help walls recede. If you love colour, use it in accents so the overall effect stays open.

6. Choose double-duty pieces

An ottoman with storage, a nesting side table or a console that can work either in a living room, entry or bedroom can extend function and flexibility.

7. Float the furniture

Pushing everything against the walls makes a room feel smaller. Pulling a sofa a few inches forward or angling a chair can create a sense of depth.

8. Less is more

Keep the pieces you love and create a colour palette and design around them.
